Subject: Research study - Effect of exercise on heart function in people with stroke

Purpose of this study:

We are evaluating the effects of exercise on fitness, heart function, and stroke risk factors in community-dwelling people with stroke who have completed their rehabilitation.

Who can participate?

  • A stroke survivor, 50-80 years old
  • Have completed formal rehabilitation
  • Are living in the community
  • Able to walk at least 3 meters (10 feet) with or without assistive devices (cane, walker)

What is involved?

  • Participants with stroke will be assessed for their fitness level, heart function, cholesterol levels and everyday activities of daily living.
  • Once assessed they will participate in either a 6-month flexibility and balance program or a 6-month aerobic exercise program.
  • The program will be assigned by chance (similar to flipping a coin).
  • All tests will be repeated at the end of the program and once more 2 months after the program has finished.

When does this study take place?

This study will start recruiting in August 2010. The exercise sessions will take place from October 2010-March 2011.

Where does this study take place/location:

  • All assessments will take place at Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, Vancouver General Hospital, 818 West 10th Ave, Vancouver, BC. and the Gordon and Leslie Diamond Centre 2775 Laurel St.
  • The exercise program will take place at the Blusson Pavilion, 818 West 10th Ave, Vancouver, BC

The day I was taking the poohts I was not feeling very good. I just focused on things I love. I imagined being on the beach and how good I felt about myself. I had lots of fun doing that! The day turned out miraculous and most of the poohts were amazing Itb4s so easy, but you have to do it Just a couple of thoughts and feelings.
