9:15 a.m. Dr. Barbara Purves – Conversations in Aphasia: Learning from Family Know-How

Aphasia presents tremendous challenges, not only for the person with aphasia but also for that person’s conversation partners. Together, family members cope with these challenges every day, and the solutions that they find provide powerful lessons for us all. Drawing on research into conversations of families where one person has aphasia, this presentation describes some of those lessons.

10:15 a.m. Dr. Lara Boyd - Stroke: The road to recovery.

Presentation of recent advances in recovery from stroke including sleep, exercise, massed practice and brain stimulation.

11:15 a.m. Heather Branscombe – marathon of stroke survival: What does the new research mean to me? How new advances in rehab can help with recovery after a stroke.

The prognosis after a stroke has changed significantly over the past few years, especially with our ever increasing knowledge about the brain, how it works and how it can change. The good news is that there is hope. Unfortunately, we know that it takes a lot of work to get there. This presentation will describe the marathon that is stroke survival and how we can apply the newest research to achieving functional gains that can improve everyday lives.
